Module summary

This module is designed to teach the knowledge and skills needed by a law graduate in order to pass the SQE examination in Functioning Legal Knowledge Part Two. (FLK II).

 

MODULE AIMS

 

On successful completion of this module, you will be able to:

  • identify and apply a fundamental legal principle or rule;
  • identify how a principle should be properly applied, and/or the outcome of that proper application;
  • demonstrate that you understand whether a client can legally achieve a desired outcome and offer appropriate explanatory advice;
  • identify why the application of a legal principle or rule produces a particular result in law and/or what the relevant legal principle or rule is;
  • perform a calculation by applying rules, rates, percentages and thresholds to identify a correct figure.

Balance of independent study and scheduled teaching activity

Overview

 

Students will be taught by a combination of on-campus and online lectures, interactive seminars, one-to-one supervision, and self-study, with students encouraged to read from specified case law, practitioners’ text books and legal journals. Students will be given the opportunity to discuss theoretical issues as well as practical problem solving.  Students will be supported in undertaking on-line research using electronic law databases and encouraged to use on line legal resources on a regular basis. There is a virtual learning environment containing handbooks, lecture notes, weblinks, discussion groups, study skills materials and assessment criteria. 

 

Experiential Learning

 

Students will be encouraged to respond to realistic case-studies relating to the sector in the style of a professional legal advisor. Students will also be able to participate in the extracurricular experiential learning offered within the Law School, including the Pro Bono Clinic and the Mooting Club.

 

Study Support

 

Students will have regular access to module tutors in person, by email and by one-to-one video conferences to support their studies. They will also engage with one formative assessment for each module, which will be marked promptly with opportunities for feedback either by email or individual discussion.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module, you will be able to do the following:

 

  1. Comprehend and manage a substantial body of legal knowledge focused on the specifics of FLK II.
  2. Apply fundamental legal principles and rules appropriately and effectively.
  3. Demonstrate a working knowledge of professional ethics and conduct in relation to the work of solicitors.
  4. Demonstrate the competencies required by the SRA of a newly qualified solicitor of England and Wales in relation to FLK II.
  5. Synthesise relevant case law and statute, understand and resolve conflicting arguments and apply the law to problem scenarios relevant to the subjects prescribed by the SRA as part of FLK II.
